New Patios in Dublin

A new patio in Dublin starts with a simple question: how will you actually use the space? Before anything is dug, the layout is worked out around where your table will sit, which corner catches the evening sun and how you step out of the back door.

Porcelain, granite and limestone samples are brought to the FREE design visit and set down in your own garden. Seeing them in Dublin daylight, against your own walls, lets you weigh the clean, even look of porcelain against the speckle of granite or the soft blue-grey of limestone.

If there is a step down from your back door, the steps and edge pieces can be made from the same stone as the patio, so the whole area reads as one finish rather than a mix of materials.

Underneath, the ground is dug out and a compacted base is built, and every slab sits on a full bed with no hollow spots. The surface is set to a gentle fall so rainwater drains towards the garden and away from your house, and the installation is backed by a 5-year warranty.

How It Works

How a New Patio Is Built

  1. Plan the Layout

Your garden is measured and the size, shape and levels are agreed with you, with samples of each stone there to look at.

  2. Dig Out

Lawn, old slabs or whatever covers the area now is cleared away, and the ground is dug out to make room for a solid base.

  3. Base & Falls

That base is compacted firmly and shaped so the finished surface falls gently away from the house.

  4. Lay & Point

Slabs go down to the agreed layout, cuts are made where needed and the joints are pointed.

  5. Final Check Together

We walk the finished patio with you, and together we confirm everything has been done the way it was agreed.

FAQs

Patios FAQs for Dublin

Do You Lay Patios in Dublin?

Yes. Dublin is about 15 km from our base in Swords, and patios are laid right across Co. Dublin, including Dún Laoghaire, Tallaght, Finglas and Clondalkin. Ring 1800 938 832 and give your Eircode to arrange a FREE site visit.

How Do I Get a Price for Patios in Dublin?

Ring 1800 938 832 or fill in the form with your Eircode. A FREE site visit is arranged at your Dublin home, the job is looked over in person and you receive a clear price that carries no small print. No deposit is taken, and there is no pressure to sign.

Which Patio Stone Is Best for an Irish Garden?

Each of the three copes well with Irish weather as long as it is laid on a good base. Porcelain is the simplest to keep clean, granite stands up best to hard wear and limestone brings a traditional blue-grey look. Samples come to your garden at the visit, so you can choose by how they look in your own light.

Will a Porcelain Patio Be Slippery in the Rain?

Outdoor porcelain is made with a textured surface for grip, and its slip resistance is rated on an R scale; R11 is widely given as the sensible minimum for a garden. Slabs for outdoor use are usually 20mm thick. At the visit you can run your hand over the samples and feel each finish before you choose.

How Big Should My Patio Be?

Size it for the furniture you plan to put out, then add enough space to walk around the table and pull chairs back comfortably. At the visit the outline is marked out on the ground with you, so you can stand in the space and judge it before any digging starts.

What Affects the Cost of a New Patio?

The main drivers are the size of the patio, the stone you pick, how much digging out and base work the ground needs, and extras such as steps or edge pieces. Porcelain takes longer to cut, so it usually costs more to lay. You get one clear price after the FREE site visit, and no deposit is taken.

Can the Patio Be Level With My Back Door?

Not quite level. The patio is finished just below the threshold of your back door and falls gently away from the house, so rain runs off into the garden instead of back towards the door. The exact levels are agreed with you at the visit, before any ground is dug.

How Much Fall Should a Patio Have?

Laying guides commonly give about 1 in 60, roughly 17mm of drop for every metre, running away from the house towards the garden or a drain. Some porcelain suppliers suggest a gentler 1:80 because the surface is so even. The levels for your patio are set out and agreed with you at the visit.

Can You Lay a Patio Over My Old Slabs?

No. Laying over old slabs means building on whatever problems are already there, so the old paving and its bed are lifted first. The new patio then goes down on a freshly dug and compacted base, which gives it a sound footing for the years ahead.

Does a New Patio Need Sealing?

Porcelain does not, because it is non-porous and stains sit on the surface. Granite needs little more than a sweep and the odd wash. Limestone can be sealed to make marks easier to clean off, but it is not essential, and the options are talked through when you choose your stone.

Is There a Warranty on a New Patio?

Yes. The installation of every new patio carries a 5-year warranty, and the slabs are separately covered by their manufacturer's warranty. No deposit is taken either: payment is due when the work is complete, and only larger projects are split into stage payments.

How Can I Tell a Patio Has Been Laid Well?

Walk across it: no slab should rock, and after rain there should be no puddles sitting on the surface. Neighbouring slabs should be level with each other (industry guidance allows about 2mm), joints should be full and even, and paving should sit at least 150mm below the damp proof course except at doorways, with air bricks left clear.
