Retaining Walls That Hold

A retaining wall holds back higher ground so the area in front of it can be level. It is often the first step in making a sloping garden usable for a patio, a lawn or a wider driveway.

Because a retaining wall carries the weight of the soil behind it, it is built on a dug and concreted footing, with the wall tied together course by course and drainage behind it so water does not build up and push against it.

Retaining walls are often built with raised beds, steps and a new patio in one job, so the levels of the whole garden are planned together.

How It Works

How a Retaining Wall Is Built

  1. Look at the Slope

We check the height of the ground to be held back and agree where the wall runs.

  2. Dig the Footing

A trench is dug along the line of the wall and filled with concrete for a solid footing.

  3. Build the Wall

The wall is built course by course, with drainage placed behind it as it rises.

  4. Backfill & Finish

The ground behind is backfilled and the wall is capped or rendered to suit the house.

  5. Final Check Together

We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Retaining Wall Questions

Do I Need a Retaining Wall?

If you want a level patio, lawn or drive on a sloping site, a retaining wall holds back the higher ground. We look at the slope at the visit and explain whether one is needed.

Why Does a Retaining Wall Need Drainage?

Rainwater collects in the soil behind the wall. Without drainage it adds weight and pressure, which can push a wall out of line over time.

Can a Retaining Wall Be Rendered?

Yes. Block retaining walls can be rendered or capped to match the house or the rest of the garden.

Can You Build Raised Beds as Well?

Yes. Raised beds are often built alongside retaining walls to bring planting up to a comfortable height and frame the patio.

Can Steps Go Through a Retaining Wall?

Yes. Steps can be built into the wall to link the lower and upper levels of the garden.
