Block Paving Contractors

Block paving suits most Dublin homes. It comes in a wide range of colours and sizes, it is non-slip in the wet, and because each block is laid separately a damaged or stained block can be lifted out and replaced without disturbing the rest.

Patterns include herringbone, which locks the blocks together and suits drives where cars turn, basket-weave and stretcher bond, and paving circles for a feature in front of the house. A contrasting border frames the drive and holds the edges.

We install paving from Kilsaran and Tobermore, and lay new block driveways as well as extending and repairing existing ones.

How It Works

How Block Paving Is Laid

  1. Visit & Samples

We measure up, check the levels and bring block samples so you can pick the colour and pattern.

  2. Dig Out

The old drive is lifted and the ground is dug out to make room for a deep base.

  3. Sub-Base & Bed

A stone sub-base is compacted in layers and topped with a screeded sand bed.

  4. Lay & Joint

The blocks are laid, cut and edged, then jointing sand is brushed in and the drive compacted.

  5. Final Check Together

We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Block Paving Questions

What Is the Difference Between Block Paving & Cobblelock?

In practice, nothing. Cobblelock is the name many people in Ireland use for block paving. Both mean concrete paving blocks laid on a sand bed over a compacted base.

Which Block Paving Pattern Is the Strongest?

Herringbone. The blocks interlock at an angle, which spreads the load and resists cars turning on the drive. Basket-weave and stretcher bond suit paths and areas with lighter traffic, or can be used as borders.

Can Block Paving Be Repaired?

Yes. Because each block is laid separately, a sunken, cracked or stained area can be lifted, the bed relevelled and the same blocks or matching new ones put back.

Which Brands of Paving Do You Use?

We install block paving from Kilsaran and Tobermore. Samples from their ranges come to the site visit so you can see the colours against your house.

Is Block Paving Better Than Tarmac or Concrete?

It costs more than tarmac but gives far more choice of colour and pattern, it is non-slip, and repairs are simpler because single blocks can be replaced rather than patching a whole surface.

Will Weeds Grow Between the Blocks?

Well compacted jointing sand keeps most weeds out. Over the years some sand washes out of the joints, and topping it up keeps the blocks tight and the joints clean.
